Down South Cajon is the outcome of my passion for music and art combined with a long career in woodworking. I grew up with a wide range of musical styles, but the common driving force has always been the beat. I have always admired music with a good beat and rhythmic lyrics. I began playing drums and guitar as a wee lad and wanted to add a cajon to my musical instrument collection.
After searching for a good quality cajon and not finding what I was looking for, I decided to make one. Using the tools and techniques I had learned throughout my career of over 30 years in woodworking, I began the design process. I started with a string cajon which was great, but not the sound I was looking for. I then moved to snare cajons. After a few tweaks, I designed a cajon I loved. After sharing it with a few people, I decided to begin marketing my design locally.
I designed my logo and name using the artistic passion I had developed since childhood. I have always loved to draw and paint. I began the process of sketching the design and having my family critique it. I finally settled on the design as a compass which is always pointing south; a reminder to always stay grounded in my southern roots no matter where I go.
The cajon is a simplistic style and is an open canvas with infinite possibilities for custom artistic design. I apply my skills in creativity and painting to each canvas creating a unique product for every customer.
